Revs Off-season Update
Good day Revs fans,
Thought it’d be a good time to do our first winter ball update and check in on how our guys are faring in the Caribbean where, let’s face it, we’d probably all like to be right about now.
First, some exciting news for a member of last year’s pitching staff as RHP Zac Grotz, whose contract was purchased by the New York Mets in June, has now signed with the Seattle Mariners. Congratulations to Grotz who authored a brilliant complete game shutout in Lancaster on May 24 and went 2-1 with a 2.53 ERA in 7 outings (4 starts) for York. With the Columbia Fireflies in the Mets system, the 25-year-old was 3-7 with a 4.61 ERA but had a very impressive 83 strikeouts to just 12 walks in 80.0 innings of work.
Also, it’s an exciting time around here. You might have already seen photos surface elsewhere but you’ll need a hard hat around PeoplesBank Park these days with field replacement underway along with construction of the 1741 Club presented by UPMC Pinnacle. Check out some of these photos, and take a look at what our upstairs space will look like come next April here: https://www.1741club.com/
Now to our guys who are currently in-season on the Winter League circuit. It’s always fun to see so many familiar names on these rosters – mentioning them all would be a bit lengthy, but we’ll cover all of the Revs currently in-action and then some:
We’ll lead off with the Revs’ leadoff man from virtually all of the 2017 championship season and the final two months of 2018, as Alonzo Harris is currently in Mexico doing what he does… tearing it up. “Zo” is currently 4th in the Mexican League in batting at a ripe .363 clip in 27 games for Mayos de Navojoa at the time of this posting. He has also belted three home runs and stolen 14 bases. One of his teammates is Atlantic League veteran New Britain Bees infielder Jovan Rosa.
RHP Grant Sides is the closer for Charros de Jalisco in the Mexican League and has been excellent with six saves, 15 strikeouts, and just two runs on four hits in 11.1 innings over 10 outings. He’s on the same staff as Atlantic League vets Will Oliver and Vince Molesky (Somerset) as well as lefty Jared Lakind (Lancaster).
RHP Joe Van Meter was in Mexico with Yaquis de Obregon earlier this offseason, the same team as Lancaster lefty and former Revs hurler Nate Reed as well as Somerset reliever Dustin Antolin.
Revs Player of the Year Melky Mesa has played in one game for Aguilas de Mexicali, and he’s batting .333… 1-for-3!
There is one other team in Mexico that currently has a boatload of Atlantic League names, and that is Tomateros de Culiacan where Rico Noel and Blake Gailen of Lancaster have appeared, as well as pitchers James Russell, Casey Coleman, Dallas Beeler, and Derrick Loop, all from Sugar Land.
Manny Corpas (York ’16-17) has appeared in 14 games for Venados de Mazatlan (0-2, 4.63 ERA) where he’s on the same squad as OF Anthony Giansanti and RHP Konner Wade (Sugar Land), along with former Skeeter and Patriot LHP Roy Merritt and Bees RHP Brandon Cunniff.
Alexi Casilla is manning second base for Toros del Este in the Dominican Republic, where he’s batting .270 in 17 games and has already stolen four bags. He’s in the same lineup as Long Island’s Jordany Valdespin who at .348 has yet to slow down from his Atlantic League Player of the Year season, as well as former Camden Rivershark Felix Pie who once hit for the cycle as a member of the Baltimore Orioles. The Toros’ pitching staff includes Fernando Abad (Long Island), Elvin Ramirez (New Britain), Bryan Evans (Lancaster), Brett Oberholtzer (Somerset), and Waldis Joaquin who appeared in six games for the Revs in 2017. Catcher Luis Cruz is listed on the Toros’ roster, but has yet to appear in a game.
RHP Junior Rincon is on the roster of Leones del Escogido in the Dominican Republic but has yet to see game action. Their bullpen includes Revs great Edward Paredes who after three seasons in York (2013-15) got his first Major League action with the Los Angeles Dodgers over the last two years.
Former Revs righty Josh Judy (York ’13, ’15) is in the bullpen for Aguilas Cibaenas where OF Alfredo Marte (York ‘16) is his teammate.
Righty Jailen Peguero has been excellent in 12 games for Estrellas de Oriente, having allowed no runs and two hits in 5.2 innings with nine strikeouts and no walks. He has recorded a save as well.
LHP Leyson Septimo (York ‘15) is in the bullpen for Tigres del Licey.
LHP Robert Carson has appeared in three games for Bravos de Margarita in Venezuela, while Isaias Tejeda is with Leones del Caracas in Venezuela where he’s batting a robust .350 with three doubles and a homer through nine games.
Former Revs righty Jorge Martinez is excelling for Cardenales de Lara; the Cuba native is 3-0 with a 1.78 ERA in five starts and has walked just two batters in 25.1 innings. Ricardo Gomez holds a 1.13 ERA in 7 outings of their bullpen, which includes Somerset closer Ryan Kelly (0.52 ERA, 8 saves) and Sugar Land closer Felipe Paulino.
While it didn’t work out in York for Jose Tabata, the former Pirates outfielder is back on the field with Aguilas de Zulia where he’s batting .370 in 16 games.
As you might have already gathered, perusing winter ball rosters is also a great place to find some surprising names and Navegantes de Magallanes promises to be worth the price of admission. OF Delmon Young is batting .310 with five home runs, 40-year-old OF Endy Chavez is hitting .296, and former Cubs star Carlos Zambrano is on the pitching staff (0-3, 10.80 in 7 games / 4 starts). Former Revs righty Zack Segovia (York ’13) is also on their staff, having allowed just two runs in seven innings out of the bullpen.
There is also plenty of intrigue with Tiburones de La Guaira where RHP Anthony Lerew is attempting a comeback. The former Northern York Polar Bear is 0-4 with a 5.24 ERA in six games (five starts), but it’s wonderful to see him back on the mound after a leg injury derailed his time in York back in 2015. Also on the roster is C Dioner Navarro (Long Island), OF Teodoro Martinez (Southern Maryland), OF Ozney Guillen (formerly of Bridgeport and New Britain), RHP Jonathan Albaladejo (Lancaster), RHP David Kubiak (Somerset), LHP Bennett Parry (Long Island), and RHP Scott Shuman (Lancaster).
We’ll be sure to share another update later on in the winter ball season which will include looks at Puerto Rico and Australia, both of which will begin play in the coming weeks.
For now, thanks for reading. Happy Thanksgiving and go Revs!
