Revs Sign Varona, Joaquin
The York Revolution have added OF Dayron Varona and RHP Waldis Joaquin in advance of Wednesday’s game vs. Southern Maryland. Varona will make his debut in left field on Wednesday while Joaquin joins the Revolution bullpen. The team released OF Derrick Robinson and RHP Luis Guzman.
Varona defected from Cuba in 2013, boating to Haiti. It took until 2015 to complete paperwork necessary to sign, but in May of 2015, he signed with the Tampa Bay Rays where he spent the next three seasons in the minors, including 19 games at Triple-A Durham this year where he batted .268. Varona belted 32 doubles and 14 home runs for Durham last season, and owns a combined .257 average with 27 home runs in the minors with Tampa Bay. On March 22, 2016, Varona made history as the first player to defect from Cuba to return to play in his country when the Rays traveled to face Team Cuba in a nationally-televised exhibition game.
Joaquin began this season in the Detroit Tigers system with Lakeland and Erie, after spending the previous four years putting up good numbers as a reliever in the Mexican League. He appeared in 19 Major League games for the San Francisco Giants between 2009-11, making the Opening Day roster of the eventual World Champions in 2010.
