Andy Marte called up to Diamondbacks, is 8th former Rev to reach MLB
The York Revolution is proud to announce that former third baseman Andy Marte, of the 2013 club, has been called up to the Major Leagues by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Marte’s contract was selected from Triple-A Reno of the Pacific Coast League on July 31, following a pair of trade deadline deals. Outfielder Gerardo Parra was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers, and infielder Martin Prado to the New York Yankees creating the need for Marte on Arizona’s Major League roster.
Marte’s return to the big leagues is due far more to his recent performance however, than it is the timing of other transactions. His numbers the last two seasons in York and the PCL made his MLB return more a matter of when, rather than if.
In 96 games with the Revolution last season, Marte batted .301 with 19 home runs and 74 RBI. His contract was purchased by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on August 4, and assigned to Triple-A Salt Lake. Marte batted .362 for Salt Lake with six home runs and 18 RBI in 26 games, but a separated shoulder in the PCL playoffs ended up costing him what seemed like a certain September call-up to Anaheim.
He elected to sign as a free agent with Arizona prior to spring training as a non-roster invitee in Diamondbacks Major League camp. Before being assigned to minor league camp, Marte homered off Los Angeles Dodgers ace Zack Greinke among other highlights, making it clear he would likely figure into MLB plans before the season was over. At Reno this season, Marte batted .330 with 13 home runs and 62 RBI in 102 games. At the time of his promotion, he was getting on base at a .384 clip and slugging an impressive .513; of his 124 hits so far this season, 41 were for extra bases.
The promotion to Arizona completes a four-year Major League comeback for Marte, who was last in the big leagues for 80 games with the Cleveland Indians in 2010. A former top prospect with the Atlanta Braves before being traded to Cleveland after the 2005 season, Marte played in 301 MLB games between ’05 and ’10.
Marte becomes the eighth former Revolution player to reach Major League Baseball, joining OF Tike Redman ’07 (2007 Orioles), LHP Justin Hampson ’10 (2012 Mets), RHP Shawn Hill ’12 (2012 Blue Jays), LHP Scott Rice ’11 (2013 Mets), LHP Ian Thomas ’12 (2014 Braves), RHP Julio DePaula ’13-’14 (2014 Orioles) and LHP Ryan Feierabend ’12 (2014 Rangers).
After six consecutive pitchers, Marte is the first York to MLB position player since Redman went from York to Baltimore within one season, during the inaugural 2007 campaign. Marte is the fourth former Rev to reach the Majors this season, an unprecedented number, the fifth since the beginning of last season and the seventh in two calendar years since the mid-point of the 2012 season.
At four years, Marte’s MLB comeback is remarkably only the third longest among Revolution alums this month. Feierabend’s promotion to Texas marked a six-year comeback (Seattle Mariners, 2008), while DePaula’s call-up to Baltimore complete a seven-year journey. (Minnesota Twins, 2007).
