Revolution Opening Day roster set: Two released, DePaula added

DePaula

Julio DePaula

The York Revolution has its roster to begin the 2014 season.  Right-handed pitchers Wes Roemer and Billy Spottiswood have been released, and the team has added right-hander Julio DePaula, who spent all of last season with York.

The transactions put the Revolution roster at 27, as up to 27 active players are allowed under Atlantic League rules until June 1, when all rosters must shrink to 25.  Usually that figures itself out, through player signings, trades, performance and so on.  With 28 players in camp, at least one was expendable, and it ended up being two when DePaula became available.  He spent spring training hoping to play in the Mexican League, but was not retained.  He is returning to York in game shape and ready to pitch.

DePaula appeared in 50 games for York last season, and carried a 2.89 ERA through 56 innings as perhaps the team’s most dependable bullpen hand.  He surrendered only four home runs in that time.  DePaula does have Major League time, 16 games out of the Minnesota Twins bullpen in 2007.

The starting rotation will be:  LHP Chris Cody, RHP Anthony Lerew, LHP Alain Quijano, RHP Corey Thurman and RHP Jorge Martinez.  When Cody starts in the opener tomorrow night, it will mark the first time since 2009 someone other than Corey Thurman will start on opening day for the Revolution, who has started the last four.  RHP Rick Bauer was the last non-Corey Thurman opening day starter for York.
