Andy Marte’s contract purchased by Angels
The York Revolution has announced that the Atlantic League contract of corner infielder Andy Marte has been purchased by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The transaction comes after Marte put together one of the Atlantic League’s top offensive seasons statistically in 96 games with York.
After spending 2012 at home in the Dominican Republic, Marte chose the Atlantic League and the Revolution as his route to get back to the Major Leagues, having spent six seasons in the big leagues with the Atlanta Braves and Cleveland Indians between 2005 and 2010, appearing in 301 Major League contests. His signing with the Revs brought him back into professional baseball for the first time since 2011 when he spent the season at Triple-A Indianapolis in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, and his impressive season in York has now catapulted him back into a Major League organization where he is one step away from a return to the big leagues with the Angels.
Marte batted .301 with the Revolution, with 19 home runs and 74 RBI. Through Friday when he last appeared in a game with York, his home run total was tied for third most in the league, and his RBI total was just three off the league-lead. Marte also was leading the league with 194 total bases, while ranking second with 45 extra-base hits, tied for second with 26 doubles, fourth in slugging percentage (.526), and fifth in total hits (111) and walks (40). The 12-year professional batted .338 with 12 home runs over his final 40 games with the Revs.
In addition to making 58 starts at third base, Marte also made a team-high 35 starts at first base. Defensively, he went 46 games without committing an error from May 9-June 27. Among his offensive highlights, the 29-year-old set the club’s first half record with 52 RBI and strung together a season-best 11-game hitting streak, July 19-28. His most memorable single-game performance came on July 14 against Southern Maryland, when he went 4-for-5 and belted a pair of home runs including a walk-off shot in the tenth inning of an 8-7 victory. He drove in four runs that day, his second-highest total of the season behind a six-RBI game in a win against Bridgeport on April 21.
Marte is the second player to be acquired by the Angels off York’s roster this season, joining right-handed reliever Josh Judy. He also joins 1B/OF Johan Limonta (Padres), RHP Matt Fox (Mets), and INF/OF Eric Patterson (Brewers) as players who’ve had their contracts purchased by MLB clubs from the Revolution this season.
Marte has the chance to become the fifth Revolution alum to make it to the Major Leagues after playing in York. Three former Revolution alums, Justin Hampson (Mets LHP), Shawn Hill (Blue Jays RHP) and Scott Rice (Mets LHP) have all reached the Majors since last June alone.
