GIF Alert: Brooks vs. Manny

The similarities between Brooks Robinson and Manny Machado continue to pile up.  They were both called up to the Orioles as basically teenagers.  They both play third base.  And it didn’t take Machado long to almost equal Brooks’ feat of throwing a guy out from nearly the first row of seats.

Apologies if the GIF makes your machine run slow, but it’s an amazing comparison; first you have Brooks’ play in the 1970 World Series against the Reds, which I have always considered, at least at third base, the greatest defensive play EVER.  Then take Machado last weekend against the Yankees…and it’s not that far off.  Enjoy.

Hey Paul! Simply amazing play. You and I have discussed Machado’s abilities several times. What makes this play so incredible is, when comparing it to the play by Brooks, is the fact that Brook’s grounder was fielded cleanly, he bounced his throw on astro-turf, and Lee May was running. Machado’s throwing arm is one of the strongest I’ve ever seen. -Greg

Awesome post Paul!!! I wonder if Brooks saw that play? If Manny comes close to Brooks the O’s are set at 3rd for along time.
