Keoni DeRenne to manage Pirates affiliate in Dominican Republic
Alumni news to pass along….
Independent baseball aficionado Bob Wirz is reporting that former Revs infielder Keoni DeRenne (’07-’09) has been promoted within the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. Last season he worked at the Pirates complex in Bradenton, FL in extended spring training, and then with Pittsburgh’s Rookie Ball affiliate in the Gulf Coast League. This season, he’ll gain his first managing experience with one of the Pirates’ two teams in the Dominican Summer League, which is very similar to Rookie Ball but for players from the Caribbean.
The Pirates have also announced another former Atlantic Leaguer, outfielder Michael Ryan, will manage their Class A South Atlantic League affiliate in Charleston, WV, the West Virginia Power. Ryan shuttled back and forth between the Minnesota Twins and Triple-A each year between 2002 and 2005, and played 65 games for the Somerset Patriots in 2008. He ended his career in the Majors in 2010 with the Angels, playing in 22 games. In five MLB seasons, he appeared in 149 games total.
A season ago, former Revs third baseman Vince Harrison (’11) was a coach with the West Virginia Power, but is reportedly no longer with the Pirates organization. His brother Josh Harrison will be Pittsburgh’s every day third baseman this season, as he was last year.
